Actress Deepika Padukone took to Instagram to repost No More Tears founder Somy Ali’s post in her stories. Somy, who runs the US-based NGO and works with the victims of domestic violence and rape, has commended Deepika’s efforts in raising awareness about depression and mental health.
“Today, I would like to bow my head down and simultaneously salute this beautiful young lady. She has talent, intellect and above all, courage. As someone who knows what depression feels like and has inherited it from my mother. I THANK YOU! It’s never easy to be vulnerable and particularly a star of this caliber. You are a real hero! #deepikapadukone,” she captioned the post.
She adds. “There were days when I just didn’t want to wake up, I would sleep because sleep for me was an escape,” said Deepika Padukone…An estimated 3.8% of the population experience depression, including 5% of adults (4% among men and 6% among women), and 5.7% of adults older than 60 years. Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression (1). Depression is about 50% more common among women than among men.”
Deepika was one of the first public figures in the film industry to confess to being depressed. Over the course of many years, she has actively taken steps to help other depression patients. She has often spoken about her feelings at the time and how depression has been a constant struggle in her life. “I was on a career high, and everything was going well, so there was no reason or no apparent reason why I should’ve felt the way I was feeling, but I would break down for no reason. There were days when I just didn’t want to wake up, I would sleep because sleep for me was an escape, I was suicidal at times,” Deepika had said earlier.
